Half Way There – an investor insight into the BRICS countries

Half way there

Two of South Africa’s top financial and economic commentators, Chris Hart and Glenn Silverman of Investment Solutions, have written a book entitled Half Way There. The book, published by COSA Media, studies the members of the five BRICS countries  (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and their relationships with one another and the rest of the world.

“The purpose of this book is to enable investors to have a better understanding of the BRICS countries so that they can use the knowledge when investing in these countries,” says Derrick Msibi, Managing Director of Investment Solutions.

According to the authors, Half Way There captures just how far the BRICS nations have come and how much further they need to go. While the BRICS nations have gained global prominence with some economic success over the past two decades, their progress appears jaded of late. Further success is not necessarily assured and to a greater or lesser extent, they are only Half Way There.

There is little doubt in the minds of Hart and Silverman that the BRICS nations will become increasingly important on the global scene due to their populations, growing economies, rising political influence and power.

“As the investment landscape evolves in response to recovering Western markets, this book comes at a pivotal time for understanding this significant, emerging market bloc. Having enjoyed a long-standing working relationship with Investment Solutions, we are pleased and proud to see this project come to fruition,” says Andy Mark, COSA Media’s editor-in-chief.

Written in an engaging style, Half Way There addresses issues such as the different national scars, national transitions, economic value chains, capital allocation and political economics. Each of these analytical lenses helps to enhance understanding of these countries from the perspective of the investor. The lessons learned are both positive and negative so that a sobering and realistic perspective of the BRICS nations is outlined. The analysis has a South African focus and extends the lessons to a roadmap for the BRICS’ African representative.

Half Way There is based on focused research trips to each of the five BRICS countries, as well as the contributions of fifty respected industry experts.

Half Way There will retail for R390 (including VAT). Net proceeds from the sale will be donated to fund tertiary education of deserving beneficiaries. It will be available at the end of September 2014. For book enquiries email halfwaythere@ishltd.co.za
